Thursday March 29th, 2018 Room 4 Newsletter Dear Families, What an amazing week in kindergarten! Your students enjoyed running and raising money for our school during our Fun Run. The students collaborated well with their 8th grade buddies during the stations of the cross. Over the Easter break please continue to read with your scholar and practice counting and math skills daily. It is so very important that you keep up with good habits with your student while they are so eager to learn and soaking up so much knowledge everyday. Today we made play doh for fine motor skills and science. Thank you for your donations the kids had so much fun! Enjoy your Easter break, see you on the 9th! Blessings, Ms. Sanders

Friday, March 23, 2018 Room 4 Newsletter Dear Families, Next week will be a great one! Tuesday is the Fun Run. Please make sure your scholar is wearing comfy athletic clothing and shoes. Thursday the 29th will be our turn to do stations of the cross with the 8th grade class. If you would like to come and watch we will be starting at 11:00 in the church. This will be a noon dismissal day. Please do not forget that Good Friday is the beginning of Easter break so we will see you all on Monday, April 9th. We will be making homemade playdough this upcoming week. This is a great fine motor skill development: great for strengthening muscle tone in little hands – squishing, squashing, rolling, flattening play dough all develop children’s muscles and encourage writing and other skills such as cutting and drawing. If you would like to donate supplies please email me first. Blessings, Ms. Sanders Thursday, March 15 2018 Room 4 Newsletter Dear Families, Thank you so much for all of your generous donations to the Oakland Children’s hospital! Your scholars learned so much about almsgiving, showing compassion, and love to others. What a perfect way to observe the season of Lent! Kindergarten and Pre-K will be taking an adventure to the Oakland Zoo to observe animals and feel a connection with wildlife. Students will learn about the clever ways animals adapted to their surroundings and developed traits that help them survive. Students act like scientists to observe animal life while focusing on their eating habits and note their habitats. We will be going to the Oakland Zoo on Friday, April 27th. We are still in need of drivers and chaperones to transport our students and help ensure their safety. We will be extending our due date to Tuesday, March 20th to turn in permission slips, trip money, drivers/chaperone letters. Thanks! Blessings, Ms. Sanders Friday, March 9th, 2018 Room 4 Newsletter Dear Families, Congratulations Milastella for being student of the month! Milastella is kind and loving to all of her friends whether they are in kindergarten, first, or second grade. She is always first to clean up after centers, and even puts away supplies that she did not take out! Milastella is a super scholar in the classroom. She is committed to doing her best, follows directions the first time, and leads by example. We are so blessed to have Milastella in our St. John community. Keep being wonderful Milastella! Thank you to all who have already donated a toy for our service learning project to the Children’s hospital! If your family would like to help donate a toy to the Children’s Hospital we would be very grateful! Have your child help “pick out” the toy to give so they are involved! Due to infection control policies, all items must be brand new. Please bring in a toy or order one directly online by March the 15th! Get into a routine when reading with your child. Read storybooks aloud with your scholar to help build vocabulary and discuss the books as you read them. Ask questions that address what your student thinks of the plot, characters and motivations within the story. Also, have your child summarize the story and compare it to other stories they know. Here are some kindergarten reading milestones. http://www.pbs.org/parents/education/reading-language/reading-milestones/kindergartner-language-development-milestones/kindergartner-reading/ Bessings, Ms. Sanders Toy Donation Drive for Oakland Children’s Hospital Kindergarten Service Learning Project Lent is here and is a season of giving! In religion class we have been covering how Jesus was generous to others especially the poor and sick so now it’s our time to give back! As a service learning project the kindergarten class will be donating new toys to the Oakland Children’s Hospital. Hospital visits are often scary for a child, so we as a class try want to help other kids and their families feel welcome and comfortable during their time in the hospital. Donated toys can help comfort and entertain children during their hospital experience. If your family would like to help donate a toy to the Children’s Hospital we would be very grateful! Have your child help “pick out” the toy to give so they are involved! Due to infection control policies, all items must be brand new. Attached to this paper is a list of items the hospital is in need of. Please bring in these items between March 5th and March 15th to the kindergarten classroom so I can take them directly to the hospital. I will also email you an amazon list of things if you would like to donate items online and have them sent straight to the hospital. https://www.amazon.com/gp/registry/wishlist/3BYIKOQS3M6VF Your generosity is greatly appreciated! Blessings, Ms. Sanders What a fantastic week in kindergarten! Your scholars got an amazing opportunity to go off campus to the chabot space and science center to actively learn about space, the solar system, and how to train like a real astronaut! Our super stars wouldn’t have been able to experience this trip without our fabulous parent volunteers who drove and chaperoned so a huge thank you to them. Please visit our class website this week to see the photos from our adventure! A picture is worth a thousand words! www.mssanderskindergarten.weebly.com Enjoy your weekend! Blessings, Ms. Sanders Friday, February 23rd, 2018 Room 4 Newsletter Dear Families, As our field trip date draws closer (next Friday 03/02) we need to make sure each parent who graciously committed their time can actually go. It is very important to turn in all of your required paperwork to the office or you may not attend. Our kinders are beginning to prepare for the big move to 1st grade! To make sure your child is fully prepared your scholar needs to read, read, read and write, write, write! This is a group effort in order for your student to be ready, both the teacher and the families need to be active in students’ learning. Seeing and using words frequently is the best way to improve reading and writing skills. When writing with your child at home please keep in mind that we encourage invented spelling in our classroom. When children create their own spellings for words they do not know how to spell correctly, they’re using invented spelling. They use what they know about letters, sounds and spelling patterns to spell the word as well as they can. Predicting how words will be spelled reinforces students’ understanding of the connection between letters and sounds, and lets them experiment with the spelling patterns they are learning. Invented spelling is a step on the path to conventional spelling, not an end in itself. Please look at your handouts from back to school night for additional information. Thanks for teaming up with me to take charge of your superstar’s education! You will make such an impact! Blessings, Ms. Sanders |
